I have found it important while reading 1 Samuel to remember the overall picture that this book fits into. The book of 1 Samuel is tied to both the books of Judges and Ruth because they are telling the story of the time when God raises up judges over the people of Israel. The people of Israel are doing what they find to be best in their own eyes instead of seeking after God. Upon this scene the young boy Samuel is born and dedicated to God by his mother Hannah. Remember to love God and love people: Deuteronomy Summary
If my life is motivated by an ambition to leave a legacy, what I would probably leave is a legacy of ambition. But, if my life is motivated by the power of God’s spirit in me and the awareness of the indwelling Christ, if I allow His presence to guide my motives, that’s the only time I think we really leave a great legacy.
-Rich Mullins
This is my favorite quote of mine is a unique way to sum up Deuteronomy. What will your legacy be built upon? What is your motivation in life? Why do you do what you do? These and many more questions are answered within Deuteronomy. Continue Reading…
Words of encouragement to a generation: Deuteronomy 3 and 4
What words of wisdom would you impart to a troubled soul? What charge do you give to people who are continually given over to straying from the commands of God? How do you encourage a people who you have represented before God? How do you sum up God’s desires for a people who are no longer going to be shepherded by you? This is the story seen in Deuteronomy chapters 3 and 4. Moses is forbidden by God to enter the promised land and he now gives last words of advice. Continue Reading…
Keys to effective and powerful leadership glimpsed: Numbers 27 and 28
How would you view the end of your life? When I die what will my thoughts be like? Moses’ life is coming to an end in Numbers 27 and God tells him to walk up a mountain to see the promised land and then he would be gathered to his people. Why do both Moses and Aaron climb a mountain to die? I suppose for Moses it was to gain a view of the promised land before his death. When I learn that death is close at hand how will I act? I yet to face the reality of my own death and I feel like my whole life is still before me with an unlimited number of things to accomplish. Moses had a full life of learning to depend upon God as the people of Israel were brought out of captivity in Egypt. Moses’ main concern was for the well-being of the people when he asks God to “appoint a man over the congregation, who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord will not be like sheep which have no shepherd.” Continue Reading…
The legacy of glacier melting and Rich Mullins
I’m lying here in bed and I just finished watching a NOVA documentary about glaciers melting. Glaciers are massive and they seem unmovable but when you look at pictures over time you can really see the changes in them. I’m not looking to debate the effect of humans on global climate because I’d much rather talk about legacy. When a glacier melts completely it dies but you are able to see that there was a glacier present. The errosion of the ground and the boulders are sign posts to the glacier. When I die what will my legacy be? Will the lack of my existence be noticable? Continue Reading…
Resolute resolution through the good, bad, and ugly times of life
I have been thinking of all that I have gone through this last year. I am amazed of all that I have endured. I had 3 operations and over 10 months of non-weight bearing on my left foot. I wonder how I came through the pain, disappointment, fear and long nights which at times made me lose sight of morning. During the new year many people make resolutions because they feel that during the next year they will be able to make all of those changes in their lives that they deem necessary to fix a problem they have. After the year that I have been through I don’t care about resolutions….. I want to be resolute in my remembrance of how I overcame each hour of need. Continue Reading…
