Who can dwell apart from God: Isaiah 33 and 34

Will you delight? Will you seek? Will you hear? Will you see? Will you? “O LORD, be gracious to us; we wait for you. Be our arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble. At the tumultuous noise peoples flee; when you lift yourself up, nations are scattered, and your spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers; as locusts leap, it is leapt upon. The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness, and he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is Zion’s treasure.” Isaiah 33:2-6  The Lord is to be exalted and praised. We must give up and trust God. The saving grace of God will be the hope that we cling to.

What awaits those who choose to not trust God? What is in store for the people who  have closed their hearts and minds to the saving grace of God? There will be eternal suffering and damnation for all people who shun God. There is no sugar coating to be placed on this fact that our sin leads to death but the hope is found when trust is placed in God. Continue Reading…

Hope in the coming day of judgement: Isaiah 23 and 24

A day is coming when God will come to judge the earth. There will be no one excluded from the moment then God returns in glory to weight the hearts and intentions of men. ”Behold, the LORD will empty the earth and make it desolate, and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants. And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor. The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered; for the LORD has spoken this word. The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the highest people of the earth languish. Will you find joy or despair in the coming judgement: Psalm 98

A moment of great fear and joy is quickly approaching for all creation, “Let the sea roar and all it contains, the world and  those who dwell in it. Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy before the Lord, for He is coming to judge the earth; He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with equity.” Psalm 98:7-9  Will you find the moment of God’s judgement upon the earth a joyous celebration? Will the coming of God to judge mankind fill you with fear and dread? Have you attempted to forget the truth that God is coming soon to judge the world by filling your life with idols? How will you be counted when judgement is at hand: Psalm 96

What do you cherish as your most prized possession? Does your family, money, status or knowledge bring you  feelings of pride, joy and contentment? All the possessions that we claim to cherish pale in comparison to the great treasure that is found in God alone. “For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before Him, strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.” Psalm 96:4-6  Do you sing of God’s great faithfulness?  Tell others around you of how God has been faithful to you in your life. Do you ascribe all you have to God’s sufficiency? Tell people that all you have in life are from God.

We need to fix our eyes on God alone, take our passions off of the idols that we have been clinging to and renew our first love of God alone. “Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all it contains; let the field exult, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the Lord, for He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. For He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in His faithfulness.” Psalm 96:22-23  All creation is awaiting for the moment that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, returns to judge the world. Will you be counted as a child of wrath of a child of God?

One man’s despair is another man’s judgement: Job 3 and 4

In Job chapters 3 and 4 we find Job lamenting his birth and one of his three companions seeks to give consul and help. Have you ever had such a traumatic moment in your life that you felt as if a dark cloud were hanging over your head and all you feel is pain? This is what Job is feeling in chapter three. He wonders if he was born only to have calamity fall upon me, then why be born at all. Is death truly an escape? What is the focus of Job’s feelings and emotions at this point? He is looking inward only and he can not look beyond the pain at this point. “For what I fear comes upon me, and what I dread befalls me. I am not at ease, nor am I quiet, and I am not at rest, but turmoil comes.” Job 3:25,26  How would you endure if you were placed in Job’s position? Would you feel that complete brokenness of your heart? Continue Reading…

The wages of sin is death: 2 Kings 9 and 10

The story of 2 Kings 9 and 10 is the fulfillment of the word spoken to Elijah in 1 Kings 19 that the wickedness of Ahab and Jezebel would not go unpunished. The judgement upon the house of Ahab didn’t come in his lifetime because God honored his repentant heart. How would you react if you were Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat after a man enters the room where you are and anoints you king and tells you that the Lord will use you to avenge Him? I would be a little stunned and very confused.

How does God use such flawed and frail beings as us? Why does He care about us? It is truly humbling to realize that God takes and interest in humanity despite our consistent failure. Continue Reading…

Choices show the quality of relationship with God: 1 Samuel Summary

The book 1 Samuel in its most simplistic form is the fulfillment of the words spoken by Moses and Joseph to the Israelites encouraging everyone to cling to God and to love Him with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength. The continued lack of regard for God that was evident in the book of Judges is continuing in the book of 1 Samuel with people choosing to whatever they want to the point of rejecting God as king over Israel. The blessing that was bestowed upon Israel has been removed and they are under the curse that God promised would follow if they did not follow all of His statutes. The Philistine occupation of Israel is a direct result of the Israelites inability and lack of desire to drive out the nations from within the promised land. It is critical to remember that 1 Samuel directly ties into the story that is present through out scripture of God working to redeem humanity. Continue Reading…

God’s faithfulness in Jubilee and hardship: Leviticus 25 and 26

The times seem so different now compared to the culture of the Israelites described in Leviticus 25 and 26. I am thankful for living in a modern society with all the amenities that I have grown accustom to but what is the cost to our relationship with God and our relationship with each other? In the agricultural of Leviticus did they feel the business of life I feel today? Can we live in dependance upon God in a truer way?
