Do you know God? Do you trust God implicitly? Listen to the words of Isaiah and think about the quality of the relationship with God that we must desire. “And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them. They are turned back and utterly put to shame, who trust in carved idols, who say to metal images, ‘You are our gods.’” Isaiah 42:16,17 Our relationship with God is marked by complete and total trust and dependance. Trust in God who declared you worthy: Isaiah 42 and 43
Boldness birthed out of God’s sufficient supremacy: Psalm 140
How can David say, “As for the head of those who surround me, may the mischief of their lip cover them. May burning coals fall upon them; may they be cast into the fire, into the deep pits from which they cannot rise. May a slanderer not be established in the earth; may evil hunt the violent man speedily.” Psalm 140:9-11 Can we truly wish the demise of someone? What is the basis of these thoughts of David? These wicked men were against God and seeking the demise of David. How does the character and opposition of these men against God allow David to seek their downfall? The character and identity of David was grounded in his relationship with God. This relationship with God afforded David the confidence to proclaim that the wicked will never proper because God was in control. “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my God; give ear, O Lord, to the voice of my supplications. O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle. Do no grant, O Lord, the desires of the wicked; do not promote his evil device , that they not be exalted.’” Psalm 140:6-8 Continue Reading…
Is God enough for you to find complete rest: Psalm 131
Is God enough? Do we find rest in God? We often look upon our lives and think that we need just one more ‘thing’ to make ourselves complete. Why do we long for more? We let ourselves get in our way: we let the pride within us dictate our needs and wants, we let our eyes lust upon the items our pride desires, and we tout how our great intellect helps us. How can we believe that God is enough when we assume requirements from God upon our lives and we think that if we work hard enough we will meet the requirements. Is our busyness an attempt to win God’s favor? Why do we feel compelled to work for our salvation which was completely finished and granted at the cross of Calvary. Continue Reading…
Find delight today knowing that God is at work: Psalm 114
What does the blessing of God look like to the world around us? Does the faith we have in God show to the people we interact with? Do the blessings God bestows upon us leave the world in awe? Psalm 114 is a simple yet mighty proclamation of what God did for His people. When you read this short psalm you get an encompassing view of God’s mighty blessing upon the people of Israel as they left Egypt. This same blessing of God is upon our lives and enables us to overcome every obstacle that we encounter. Will you live in the power of God’s blessing in your life? Will you boldly go about your day knowing that the hand of God is actively working in your life? “Tremble, O earth, before the Lord, before the God of Jacob, who urned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a fountain of water.” Psalm 114:7,8 Find delight today knowing that God is working in your life and that nothing can hinder His work. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble: Psalm 107
“Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, and consider the lovingkindness of the Lord.” Psalm 107:43 These last words of the psalmist in Psalm 107 simply state all that is conveyed through the psalm. Mankind perceives itself as wise and intelligent, always ready to make the correct decision. Under the deception of sin we perceive many unhelpful and unhealthy actions as inherently helpful. We choose to implement our own design for our lives that is against God’s flawless design. Throughout Psalm 107 the phrase “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble…” is consistently repeated. The children of Israel continued to run away from God following their own ways only to find that there was nothing more than trouble to be found. God continually rescued Israel from their troubles. How can it be that people live to see God’s deliverance with their own eyes only to turn away and forget His faithfulness the next moment? Continue Reading…
Cling to the foundation built upon God’s faithfulness: Psalm 71
Why do you get up in the morning? Do you have an eternal perspective as you live from day to day? Have you felt life becoming completely futile and lacking hope? Whatever we choose to focus our heart, mind, soul and strength upon will shape the outlook we have for life. If you have consistently focused your attention throughout life upon the accumulation of things in this world you are walking a perilous path that will leave you bereft of hope. Psalm 71 describes the beauty of a life wholeheartedly devoted to God. Can we wholeheartedly follow God? Continue Reading…
Out of blessing God’s love is proclaimed: Psalm 67
Why do we desire God’s blessing? Has life become difficult and you desire God to make your burden lighter? Do you desire to have success in all of your ambitions and actions? Many times our motive for desiring God’s blessing in our life is based solely on ourselves to promote our own selfish desires. Why do we consistently see our own gain above all else? What should motivate our desire for His blessing? In Psalm 67, the psalmist is seeking God’s blessing for himself and Israel, “Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the all the peoples praise You. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy; for You will judge the peoples with uprightness and guide the nations on the earth.” Psalm 67:3,4 Continue Reading…
Get out of your own way and trust God: Psalm 64
The worries that you allow to fester and grow as you sojourn through life will bring despair to your soul. The concerns about people who express a deep hatred towards you will overshadow your joy, fear of people who scheme against you seeking your downfall and demise will rob you of peace and the boastful pride of this wicked world will sap your strength as you wade through the muck and mire of daily life. The wicked people of the world tout their knowledge and pride thinking that they are clever enough to rise above the power of God but hope for the downtrodden is found in God. Continue Reading…
Out of the miry clay and set upon solid ground: Psalm 40
Have you ever attempted to walk through a pool of thick mud? How easy was it to maneuver through that mud? Even if you managed to claw and crawl your way through the muddy ground you remain tainted by its influence on you. Your clothes are stained and muddy and your body is caked with grime. In Psalm 40 David speaks of his relationship with God, “I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many will see and fear and will trust in the Lord” Psalm 40:1-3 Continue Reading…
Wisdom to my heart and perception to my eyes: Psalm 29
“Ascribe to the Lord, O son of the mighty, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His name; worship the Lord in holy array.” Psalm 29:1,2 How do you read passages in the in the Bible? Are you filled with awe as you read about the greatness of God? Do you wrestle with the word of God so you can glean truths to apply to your life? Psalm 29 initially perplexed and confused me causing me want to run to all the cross references and commentaries littered about the page of my Bible. Why do we so often want to run to what other people have thought about scripture instead of toiling and meditating on the Word of God for ourselves. Instead of seeking out the commentary in my Bible I turned to the words of Psalm 29 and meditated on their meaning. Lord grant wisdom to my heart and perception to my eyes as I look at your Word.
