Choice is a matter of volition, faith a matter of heart: Jeremiah 3 and 4

What choice have you made? The choice is one of devotion and dependance. Will you choose to depend on the idols that clutter your life or will you depend wholeheartedly on God alone as the source of sufficiency? The story of Israel in Jeremiah speaks to the wayward human heart that battles against God. The word of God to Israel, ”Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, ‘Return, faithless Israel, declares the LORD. I will not look on you in anger, for I am merciful, declares the LORD; I will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your guilt, that you rebelled against the LORD your God and scattered your favors among foreigners under every green tree, and that you have not obeyed my voice, declares the LORD. Return, O faithless children, declares the LORD; for I am your master; I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.’” Jeremiah 3:12-14 Would you turn away from your idols and back to God if you were Israel? Are you worshiping idols today, will you forsake them and cling to God? Continue Reading…

Has your faith in God become a status or merit badge which you cling to? Oh yes, I am a christian; I’d never do what those other people do. Has your christian life become one of process and practice? We go about our routine of serving God but we do not see Him. Why do we lose sight of God? Continue Reading…

Escape the weariness of life and find hope for tomorrow: Isaiah 46 and 47

What is pride? How does it dwell in your life? The weariness of life often times begs for some relief, any relief, a simple escape but our desire always eludes us. We often will think that if we could just have a little more prowess, luck, or even love we will finally be able to overcome the stress of life. Can anything in this life give us a lasting hope and pleasure? Is there any hope for us? “Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures, who sit securely, who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one besides me; I shall not sit as a widow or know the loss of children’:  These two things shall come to you in a moment, in one day; the loss of children and widowhood shall come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and the great power of your enchantments. You felt secure in your wickedness, you said, ‘No one sees me’; your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray, and you said in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one besides me.’” Isaiah 47:8-10  We cannot afford to believe that we live in a world without God. We build up our fortresses and towers of rules, regulations, and ideologies but we cannot keep the living God outside of our walled existence. There is nothing that we should value more than God and His desire for our life. Continue Reading…

One Minute on The Body of Christ

Our fears and failures are abolished: Isaiah 25 and 26

“O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.” Isaiah 25:1  Can you fathom the great purpose of God? Have you become consumed by the worries of life as you go about your life? We cannot afford to think so highly of ourselves as to not need God. Sadly we often find ourselves seeing wonders around us yet not perceiving God at work around us. We place our trust in Jesus Christ but without tangible reality to ground our faith we forget God is absolutely surrounding us. Why do we desire a tangible facet of faith? Continue Reading…

The unstoppable will of God: Isaiah 21 and 22

Will you acknowledge your Hope? When you find yourself blessed do you attribute that blessing to your own prowess or your luck? Do you remember that God is that one who is at work in your life? Read the story of Isaiah 22 and learn what happens when selfish pride overwhelms man. “Therefore I said: ‘Look away from me; let me weep bitter tears; do not labor to comfort me concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people.’ For the Lord GOD of hosts has a day of tumult and trampling and confusion in the valley of vision, a battering down of walls and a shouting to the mountains.” Isaiah 22:4,

Just turn and start that journey of faith before you: Isaiah 19 and 20

Can anything that we hold in high regard give us lasting hope? Can money buy us assurance? Will friendship provide the lasting fellowship we crave? Can the power and renown of our ethnicity, nation, or religious denomination grant us the hope that tomorrow will be better than today? “An oracle concerning Egypt. Behold, the LORD is riding on a swift cloud and comes to Egypt; and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence, and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them. And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians, and they will fight, each against another and each against his neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom; and the spirit of the Egyptians within them will be emptied out, and I will confound their counsel; and they will inquire of the idols and the sorcerers, and the mediums and the necromancers; and I will give over the Egyptians into the hand of a hard master, and a fierce king will rule over them, declares the Lord GOD of hosts.” Isaiah 19:1-4 In Isaiah 19 we see how nothing can stand against the will of God. Prowess, power, and cunning are of no use against God when He determines to move.

Leaving pride to find the enveloping grace of God: Isaiah 15 and 16

What of do you think about pride? Is pride a noble virtue, an inherent quality of mankind, or a fault to overcome? Look at the people of the world who you pass by each day. Have they presumed to live their lives in complete apathy towards God and endure without calamity? We create monuments to our vanity as we glory in ourselves each day. Oh the wretchedness of humanity ; we take the precious gift of life that God has given us and we degraded it to a freak occurrence of nature over billions of years. Do we fear God? Do we realize the peril that is upon our doorstep as we glory in our pride of life? Continue Reading…

Can we lay a claim on the things that he cannot see: Proverbs 17 and 18

How can we quantify and describe God’s refining work in the lives of mankind? Is refinement a simple process that tickles or causes joy and pleasure? “The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests hearts.” Proverbs 17:3  Gold and silver are precious metals that we value to such extents that we dig deep beneath the surface of the earth to obtain them. After such great lengths to secure the gold and silver it is subjected to great heat to refine it. Proverbs 17 speaks of how God acts upon the hearts of men just as the refining pot refines silver or the furnace purifies gold. What does this mean? God is the only force that is capable of refining and purifying the corrupt hearts of men. There is no other source of purification for the lives of the men and women of the world. If this is true what impact should it have upon out lives? Should we care? Continue Reading…

God is sovereign, sinless, and pure: Psalm 149

How can worship and wrath coexist? In Psalm 149 we are given two pictures by the Psalmist; verses one through 4 speak of worshiping God with a new song while verses 5 through 9 speak of wrath falling upon God’s enemies. Can we make a connection between worship and wrath? “Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise in the congregation of the godly ones… Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand…” Psalm 149:1,5  The key to remember as we seek to understand how worship and wrath can coexist is God alone. If we focus on ourselves we will never reconcile seemingly polar opposite ideas but once we remember and acknowledge that it is God who is sovereign, sinless, and pure we can know that in this sin tainted world the things that are at odds with each other are actually in harmony.
