Details on an ark, a tabernacle, and some furniture: Exodus 25 and 26

Chapters 25 and 26 in Exodus make me just wonder why? What is the purpose of giving us the detail of how the ark, tabernacle, and furniture was to be made? One reason to include the detail of how everything was assembled is to help people understand what an ark and tabernacle would look like. It is the same idea of simile that I mentioned before. It helps to have such detailed instructions and details to help us understand and visualize what God was commanding the Israelites to do. In the details of the construction it also shows how much wealth God had blesses the people of Israel with. Continue Reading…

A glimpse of God is all we need: Exodus 23 and 24

I am captivated by the slight glimpse given to us the reader about what Moses, Nadab, Abihu, and the elders saw when they worshiped at a distance with God. It is amazing to think that they mention the pavement! How often would we note the pavement or floor someone is standing on as something noteworthy? We would never say that we would note clothing, hair and eye color, or whether they spoke eloquently. In this case of describing God could any words that Moses could have written done justice to the true image of God? Continue Reading…

Preparation for a date with God on Mount Sinai in Exodus 19 and 20

Such a wonderful date… I think of the preparation that I go through when there is a girl I want to impress. I take extra care to make sure my hair is clean and shiny, my breath is fresh, and I smell sweet. This is all in preparation for most likely a few hours where I may be around the girl. Now look at Genesis 19:10 where God tells the Israelites to consecrate themselves for 2 days prior to His coming to mount Sinai. How feeble my efforts to impress the opposite sex appear in light of God. Continue Reading…

A torrent of water from a rock in Exodus 17 and 18

What a picture is painted in Exodus 17:1-7. Think of it, the people have seen God’s activity in their midst time and time again yet they still grumble about the little things of life. They even have manna and they worry about water to drink. This is where the story gets really good. Moses goes through the people of Israel with some elders. You have to imagine that Moses’ moving around was easily noticed. Continue Reading…

God’s faithfulness in the hardship of life: Exodus 15 and 16

Overcoming the insurmountable by remembering: Exodus 13 and 14

>I am currently in the midst of a battle where there sometimes seems to be no human rational for why I am going through this. I think of the people of Israel when they were caught between the sea, the mountains, and an angry army. What is the initial reaction that we display when we are faced with an insurmountable foe? The people of Israel became fearful and wondered why they were lead to this wilderness to die! They didn’t remember the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night which was with them when the difficulty came. Continue Reading…

The plague of the first-born: Exodus 11 and 12

Consider the weight of Exodus 12:30 when it says that not one Israelite family in Egypt was not effected by the final plague. It is amazing to think about how it would have struck fear in an already fearful nation after the previous plagues. Every family with children was effected at least once. Some families would lose mother, father, and children. God showed that He is the Sovereign God through this. I cannot fully grasp what happened but I am just amazed. Continue Reading…

God’s glory from a hardened heart: Exodus 9 and 10

I am so amazed at how God hardened Pharaoh’s heart time and time again so that through the pharaoh glory would be given to God. It is interesting how Pharaoh kept acknowledging that he was sinning and never truly meant to turn. I know that there would be no genuine repentance because God was hardening his heart to make an example. I am thankful that I am able to have forgiveness from God because of Christ’s death on the cross for me. What an amazing blessing that is.

Seeing God at work in every moment: Exodus 7 and 8

I love the reason that God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. It was for His signs and wonders to be multiplied. At first Pharaoh’s magicians were able to mimic the wonders that God did with the staff changing into a snake, the water changing to blood, and the frogs coming onto the land but when the gnats came the magician’s said that, “This is the finger of God”. How many times do we not see god’s hand in the daily events of life? Continue Reading…

The relentless taskmaster of Exodus 5 and 6

What a harsh master Pharaoh was to the people of Israel. He made them work and toil away when they felt oppressed. They could not make him happy and all he wanted was their commitment as servants. In contrast look at God. He listened to the cries of the people of Israel and intervened to help them. God met them where they were in the midst of their lives and pain to help them. They were eager to accept the fact that God wanted to free them but they didn’t want the extra temporary discomfort that came along with it. It is like a crucible. Continue Reading…
