How do we describe moments when we become weary in our faith or lose hope? Has God changed in that moment causing us to feel a perceptible difference? God never changes so any change in our demeanor must be attributed to ourselves and the effect of our surroundings upon us. What is the root cause of our weariness or loss of hope at different times in life? A shift of perspective takes place causing us to take our focus off of God placing it upon ourselves or something we have elevated as an idol. What do we do when we lose focus on God?
In Psalm 31 David is expressing how he overcomes adversity when weariness abounds and hope is elusive. As calamity sought to overtake David he chose to turn to God for protection and strength. What is notable from Psalm 31? Help to overcome our inherent sinfulness, our wavering emotions and the evil of the world comes from God alone. David is expressing his weariness to God in Psalm 31 but he continually reaffirms that his hope and trust is found in God, “But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord, I say, “You are my God.” My times are in Your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me. Make Your face to shine upon Your servant; save me in Your lovingkindness.” Psalm 31:14-16 Trouble surrounded David but that did not prevent hope and trust from being found and secured in God. Can you trust God for help? Seek out God in every moment and learn of His faithfulness that is seen throughout scripture. “O love the Lord, all you His godly ones! The Lord preserves the faithful and fully recompenses the proud doer. Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the Lord.” Psalm 31:23,24
