Will you indeed take refuge in God: Psalm 60

Words are a mighty way to proclaim who you are to the people around you. You can claim to be a great lover of books but you never read books. You can say that you are an expert photographer but you only use a camera once a year. Do you tell of your renowned cooking but you takeout food more often than you make it. We claim many things by our words but we cannot let our words be the only proof of who we are. Our actions will truly speak of who we are because by doing we show what our heart desires. What does your words proclaim about God? Do your actions affirm the words of your mouth?

Do you ever look upon your situation in life and think that everything is stacked against you? In those moments what are you looking to for hope? The hope you need in every situation in life is found in believing that every situation in life is ordained and allowed by God. You are in your present situation because God has a purpose for you being there. In Psalm 60 David knew that everything that happened to himself and Israel was because of God alone. He was pleading for God to be faithful and bring deliverance in the difficult moments of life. There was no other hope for David other than looking to God alone. “O give us help against the adversary, for deliverance by man is in vain. Through God we shall do valiantly, and it is He who will tread down our adversaries.” Psalm 60:11,12

The watershed of hope is found as you rest in the refuge of God. Trust God to carry you through the difficult moments and you will find a torrent of hope flooding through your life. When you let God, the creator of heaven and earth, carry your burdens of life you will have a renewed outlook. If your words tell of how God is your refuge and help in moments of trouble, will your actions in life show that you cling to God with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength? Take time to rest in God consistently and when the troubles of life rise to overtake you a hope and peace will be secured because of your steadfast faith in God’s sovereign provision.

Legacy of remembering our inadequacy and God’s sufficiency: Psalm 59

Do we always remember that God is truly faithful at all times? Are we aware of our inherent inadequacy? The weight of our sinful condition needs to bear down upon reality for us to fall helplessly before God’s mercy. As we see our own inability we will turn to God as our source of strength to make it through life. “Because of his strength I will watch for You, For my God is my stronghold. My God in His lovingkindness will meet me; God will let me look triumphantly upon my foes.” Psalm 59:9,10 God will bring us to a place of assured peace and hope. No matter the foe, we need to release the every situation to God and trust in His faithfulness. Continue Reading…

Ultimate source of justice for the downtrodden and oppressed: Psalm 58

Does justice exist today? Can man truly be just in his actions? In Psalm 58 we are given hope to endure this wicked world that appears to lack justice. David speaks to the wicked of this world, “Do you indeed speak righteousness, O gods? Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men? No in heart you work unrighteousness; on earth you weigh out the violence of your hands.” Psalm 58:1,2  Mankind is cursed by sin and incapable of being just. From birth we are accursed and blinded to the paths of truth and we can only wander in the darkness of our evil deeds. Continue Reading…

Our eternally faithful help and hope: Psalm 57

Destruction and devastation are all encompassing, emotions have run unchecked and uncertainty fuels an encroaching despair. When trouble of any form rears its head we are left helpless. In moments like these do you believe that God is ready and able to help you weather the storm? We need to seek out and believe that God is able to help us every moment of every day. In Psalm 57 David is affirming his belief that God is able to carry him through any calamity that he may face. “Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me, for my soul takes refuge in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge until destruction passes by. I will cry to God Most High, to God who accomplishes all things for me.” Psalm 57:1,2 Continue Reading…

Fear is overcome by God’s faithfulness: Psalm 56

What is fear? Is fear our response to the unknowns of life when we have no foreknowledge of future outcomes, peoples intentions for us and our own potential? How do we deal with fear in our lives? “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me?” Psalm 56:3,4  We are to place our trust in God alone when we feel the swelling tide of fear ebbing towards us. As we place our hope for the future in God’s hands we release the fear and dread that seek to destroy us. Continue Reading…

Take flight and rise above the perilous battle: Psalm 55

When worry, despair and tragedy encroach around you does a desire to run away develop in your heart? When you decide to run away from the worries and pain of your life where do you go? Where is your refuge and stronghold? In Psalm 55 David places his hope in God to make it through the difficult moments, ”I said, ‘Oh that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. Behold, I would wander away, I would lodge in the wilderness. I would hasten to my place of refuge from the stormy wind and tempest.’” Psalm 55:6-8  To take flight and rise above the pain of this world is our inner desire. As we attempt to take flight we will only fail but fortunately God enables us to fly to Him as a refuge and He lifts us up above the burdens of life. Continue Reading…

Reflection upon God’s faithfulness builds reflex: Psalm 54

re•flex |ˈrēˌfleks| : an action that is performed as a response to a stimulus and without conscious thought

Can a reflex be learned? Can a repeated process lead to development of a reflex? When you think of all that you do throughout your day how many things are accomplished by reflex actions? What reflex action takes place when you are overcome by the circumstances surrounding you? Do you have a spiritual reflex that causes you to run to God when you face trouble? In Psalm 54 David’s reflex to run to God for help takes over as he faces overwhelming foes, “Save me, O God, by Your name, and vindicate me by Your power.” Psalm 54:1

Corruption and inability births a longing for salvation: Psalm 53

Have you noticed the inherent foolishness of humanity? We strive and toil to make a name for ourselves but we only reap death for all our perceived prowess and power. We spiral into deeper depths of corruption when we are left to our own ways. What if this was humanities epitaph, “Death, despair and hopelessness abounded for mankind. Then death came calling.”? Would there be reason to hope ? In Psalm 53 David proclaims how inherently sinful and wicked all men are. The fact that no man could obtain God’s favor was apparent to David. Out of this reality of man’s inability David longs for the deliverance and salvation of Israel. ”Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! Where God restores His captive people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.” Psalm 53:6 Continue Reading…

When foolishness abounds as the wicked prosper: Psalm 52

Take heed to the words of Psalm 52. What do you boast in? Do you a boast in God alone or are you  boasting and delighting in the pervasive evil of this world? When you build up your wealth and possessions do you choose to stand upon them with your hands extended proclaiming what you have accomplished? David is sending a message to everyone who boast in anything but the God of heaven and earth. If you choose to boast in the things of this world you will be brought low by God and all your accumulations will be meaningless. We are unable to cut our own path to our own salvation. We need to fall before the cross of calvary and cray our for God’s intercession and deliverance. Fear God and find your hope in Him for men can take away your possessions and your life itself but only God is the one who will cast people into everlasting torment in hell. Continue Reading…

Does your failure and cycle of sin cause you pain, regret, and despair as your strength is sapped away? Do you choose to wallow in sin because it is too difficult to find hope and help to rise out of the mire? No matter what your outlook is, when you sin you will find hope and encouragement from the life of David the shepherd king of Israel. David was a great king of Israel but he was just as prone to failure as we are today. We are granted a glimpse of David’s life when he responds to God after taking Bathsheba as his own wife.
