Dwelling in perpetual thankfulness to God: Psalm 30

Do enjoy watching sporting events? Do you get caught up in the moment as you cheer along for your favorite team? When your children perform in a musical, play or choir do you cheer them on? We are eager to cheer each other on in the mundane and exciting moments of life. Are you enthusiastically praising God for His goodness to you? Will you value your relationship with God as paramount in you life? Do you remember to thank God?

We cry out for help from God when we are on the brink of despair but how often do we take time to thank God when the moment of crisis has passed? In Psalm 30 David is remembering that God has answered his cries for help. When David cried for help God healed him and gave him strength. Continue Reading…

Wisdom to my heart and perception to my eyes: Psalm 29

“Ascribe to the Lord, O son of the mighty, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His name; worship the Lord in holy array.” Psalm 29:1,2 How do you read passages in the in the Bible? Are you filled with awe as you read about the greatness of God? Do you wrestle with the word of God so you can glean truths to apply to your life? Psalm 29 initially perplexed and confused me causing me want to run to all the cross references and commentaries littered about the page of my Bible. Why do we so often want to run to what other people have thought about scripture instead of toiling and meditating on the Word of God for ourselves. Instead of seeking out the commentary in my Bible I turned to the words of Psalm 29 and meditated on their meaning. Lord grant wisdom to my heart and perception to my eyes as I look at your Word. Lesson from the life of a toddler and the joy of a puppy: Psalm 28

I love the lessons that we learn from babies. Their nature is completely raw and laid bare as they express their feelings. How often does a toddler require assurance that they are safe? I have often observed young children happily playing only to suddenly express worry and cry out looking for their parents. The child is longing for the assurance that they are safe and that help is readily available. This same need for assurance can be seen in the behavior of a newborn puppy who is eagerly playing one moment and in an instant they are looking about them making sure that their owner is at hand. There is an inherent need found with in all of creation for security, rest and peace. As we grow up we continue to seek out assurance that we are safe. Many times the item we seek out for assurance becomes an idol that doesn’t truly give any lasting security, rest or peace. Continue Reading…

Persistant expectation of blessing in this life: Psalm 27

When life becomes a gauntlet of trouble where will you find hope? Has a life filled with adversity stolen your joy? When you wake up in the morning are you filled with dread? Have worries filled your mind because the world seems to be out of control. What do we do? “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread?” Psalm 27:1  We need to cling to the Jesus Christ for our salvation and our defense. We need to hold fast to the truths found in scripture. Listen to David’s heart in Psalm 27, “One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple.” Psalm 27:4 Continue Reading…

Yeah justified oh blessed thought: Psalm 26

How are we justified? Can we justify ourselves through any action of our own? Often we think that because followed our perceived rules that we should automatically be justified. Can the events of our life give us a valid picture of God’s view of us? We cannot fathom what God is purposing to accomplish through us. We set ourselves up for disappointment when we believe that our relationship with God is based on giving and taking. The moments of trouble and trial or peace and quiet that we endure are all ordained and allowed by God to bring glory to Himself. Continue Reading…

A fast food faith in God will never satisfy: Psalm 25

Do you enjoy waiting? When you are unemployed is it easy to wait on God to provide work as the money in your bank account runs out? When you are single do you desire to take the best option for a spouse currently around you instead of waiting for God’s perfect match for your life? Sometimes do you wish you could get a fast food faith in God that you could get by driving through a church parking lot instead of a life of faith developed through years of dependance on God in painful moments? The most important aspect of life and faith are governed by waiting. It is not natural for us to wait so how do we learn to endure and trust God? Continue Reading…

Approach the King of glory and find rest for your soul: Psalm 24

Why do we believe that we are our own possession? How does the idea of freewill come into our relationship with God? Do we really have any ability to impose our own will? There are many varied moments where I believe that I can do anything but as I read Psalm 24 I am reminded that I am ill-equipped for this life. Everything in all the vast creation that surrounds us belongs to the Lord because He made it all.The only trait we display wholeheartedly is our collective desire to rebel, sin and worship idols. How can anyone get the clean hands and pure heart mentioned in Psalm 24:4 so that we may ascend the hill of the Lord and stand in His holy place? How can we be made holy when the bar is set completely out of our reach?

Stop striving and trust God: Psalm 23

How often have you read a devotional or heard a sermon explaining Psalm 23? I have read a few books that use the six verses as their foundation. When a piece of scripture is so frequently discussed by so many people, do we more easily take the words contained in the scripture for granted? Take time to rediscover the truth that is contained in Psalm 23 by only using your Bible as you meditate on these glorious truths. Take time to ask questions about the text and meditate on how you are effected. Continue Reading…

Foreshadowing of deliverance from David: Psalm 22

Would you remain steadfast in your faith and dependance on God when everything in life seemingly turns against you and God is silent? When David was faced with overwhelming odds of deliverance he resolutely placed his trust in God alone. Are you downtrodden today facing your overwhelming trouble, trial and tribulation? If you are weary in the depths of your soul I ask you to sit down and read through Psalm 22 and let the truth envelope your heart. David was a man who was completely flawed like we are today yet his hope to overcome his sinfulness and the schemes of men was found in God. Continue Reading…

Strength, salvation and blessing in abundance: Psalm 21

We are richly blessed by God; in Psalm 21 we are told how God has done so much for the king of Israel. Strength, salvation, blessing, splendor and majesty were all given to the king in abundance by God. What is noteworthy about the king of Israel? His trust of is placed in God alone and the enabling power of God works through these men to accomplish God’s will. Does it seem like this Psalm doesn’t have much to say to the christian today? We are not kings and we do not seek victory in battle. If you are thinking about moving on to another Psalm please take another look at Psalm 21 and as you read through all the blessings think about all the blessings that you have in Jesus Christ. We are given strength, salvation and blessing in abundance from Jesus Christ. We are enabled to live through this sinful world bringing glory to God because of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.
