What would you desire from God if He were to offer you anything? Would our requests reflect our view and opinion of God? In 2 Chronicles 1 Solomon’s requests for wisdom to lead the people of Israel is recounted. There are moments in my life when I think a material need is the most important need I have such as money, a home, or a vehicle. Solomon could have asked for riches but they would eventually lose all value and degrade. In the same way anything I run after in this life is just a fleeting and unable to retain eternal value. I have sometimes thought that my life would come to its ultimate definition if I found a wife but no person can give my life fulfillment. Could a life of perfect health bring hope for tomorrow? Could a life free from conflict bring lasting joy to your life? We will never find contentment apart from God because our ever changing passions and emotions will always lead us to a point of discontentment in this world filled with idols. We will crave the next item on our list to find a temporary fix.
Why did Solomon choose wisdom? What does Solomon’s request for wisdom say about his view of God? Solomon knew that he could not lead the people of Israel without help from God. It would have been a futile endeavor. I am thankful for the wisdom that God gave Solomon because it make me question where I place my value and worth. If anything other than God is desired as the focal point of your life that is an idol and you will never find what you desire.
Lord I want the faith to follow you wholeheartedly for the rest of my life. To live life loving You with all my heart, mind, soul, and strength as I cling to You through the joys and sorrows of life. Lord grant me a passion to live out my faith before all people so they will see you when they look upon me. That is what I desire Lord. I cannot do this apart from you, Amen.
