Foundation upon remembering Agape Love: Deuteronomy 5 and 6

The foundations of life for the Israel are being repeated by Moses to all the people. Why is it necessary to repeat what had been told and recorded previously? God knows the hearts of men and through mans every act of unfaithfulness and rebellions God proved Himself faithful to us. The reservoir of God’s faithfulness is infinite and His love for the people of Israel is being expressed as He reminds the people of how to live their life. In Deuteronomy 5 verses 28 and 29 tell, “The Lord heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken. Oh that they had such a heart in them, that they would fear Me and keep all My commandments always, that it may be well with them and with their sons forever!’” Do I fear God? Is my view of God true to who He is? I should have a holy fear of God not in the sense that God will kill and punish me but a view of  awe, wonder, and amazement of God. Lord please help me have a proper view of who you are.

As I read about the Ten Commandments right now as I am in the midst of the Easter story I have a different perspective than when I was reading them in Exodus. Yesterday I was blessed to be able to celebrate Maundy Thursday with some wonderful friends. During our time together we saw how when Jesus commands us to love God and also love people as ourself it will truly sum up the laws. The Ten Commandments point to this truth that true Godly love expressed will fulfill the law.

The idea of loving God is openly discussed in Deuteronomy chapter 6 when Moses warns the people to always, “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Moses is exhorting the people to not forget God. When the Israelites inherited the promised land and life became easier they needed to guard against turning away from God. In the same way I need to be seeking God daily and remembering who He is so that no matter what circumstance I find myself in I can remember who God is. In your daily life I ask you to join me in not forgetting God and continuing to seek Him on a daily basis. May you be blessed as you draw closer to Him.
