Overwhelming iniquity of mankind and a scapegoat: Leviticus 15 and 16
I have found it enjoyable yet difficult to read through Leviticus. I am overwhelmed by the burden the law places upon the Israelites. In Leviticus 15 you find out what circumstances cause a person to be unclean and it seems like everyone is unclean frequently. In chapter 16 verse God tells the people that the law is for their good because they will not defile His tabernacle. I know I struggle accepting rules even when they are for my own good. How did the Israelites react to this command? There is no way to live a pure life as a sinful man. It is only by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone that we can be pure and holy. I feel the weight of sin upon my life and it would crush me if it were not for Christ.
In chapter 16 God commands Moses to instruct Aaron to make atonement for the defiling of the tabernacle by his son’s. What was on Aaron’s mind, he has lost his son’s and now he had to go before God. Was he scared? I think it is interesting how there are two goats used to make atonement one which is sacrificed to God and the other is a scapegoat.
The [scapegoat] shall shall bear on itself all the iniquities to a solitary land…
Leviticus 16:22a
Jesus is my scapegoat. How or why Jesus willingly died for me boggles my mind. I am so very thankful for His gift.
