A foreshadowing of Jesus Christ in the thicket: Genesis 21 and 22
What did the scene look like when Abraham went to sacrifice his son Isaac? It makes me wonder about the scene. I think it is easy for me to overlook the story as a quick event. In reality Abraham and Isaac set up the altar for the sacrifice. When Abraham bound Isaac I think is was the hardest thing he had ever been called to do. It wasn’t an automaton that went to sacrifice on the mountain. It was a loving father who I imagine cried and hurt as he followed God’s command. I wonder how Isaac felt? He must have been terrified being bound and having a knife ready to kill him. What an image of love. The love for God and the love of a father and son.
It is too easy for me to be an automaton when I recall the cross of Christ. I have heard the story many times and it is too easy to just think that the cross was just where Christ died on the cross for my sins. If I let my thoughts remain there I am missing a very important part of the story. That part is a loving Father who sent His one and only Son to die. In this story there was no command that stayed the blade. Christ died for me where I should have been the one who died. I am the Isaac and Christ is the ram that was set in my place on the altar. How humbling it is to think that I am so connected to the story that occurred on the mountain with Abraham and Isaac.
